On Monday, June 11 we held our latest meeting followed by a class on pest control. We had a large turnout for this event. We began with an open discussion about the status of everyone's garden. Almost every comment was positive with people stating how pleased they were about the progress of their garden. In the days following the meeting I made several visits to several participant's gardens. I was impressed the with the progress that has been made since my last visit. Most of the gardens were being taken care of very nicely. I am still requesting recipes from our participants. I also asked the participants to provide me with a statement of what they think of the Grow Appalachia program and how it has affected them in terms of family time, money saving and prospects for the future harvest in their garden. I also requested and received a signed media release from the participants that were present. I am now working on receiving these releases from those participants that were not present at the meeting for one reason or another.
After the meeting we held a class on pest control. We discussed the organic spray that we provide to each participant. The response to this spray was very positive with most participants stating that this spray has been very effective. We discussed ways to keep deer and other animals out of our gardens. We asked if anyone needed any barricades and most said they did not need any at this time. One of our participants, who is a life long gardener, stated some of the methods that she uses to keep amimals from her garden. This led to an open ended discussion about what the participants did to keep animals from their garden.

Fried Green Tomatoes
Sliced green tomatoes, sliced 1/8 inch thin
1/2 cup milk
Salt & pepper
Beat milk and egg together. Add salt and pepper. Dip tomato slice in milk and egg mixture, then into cornmeal mix. Fry until brown in Crisco oil. May add salt to top while draining on paper towel. Can be used to fry eggplant. Be sure it is sliced thin.
