The Grow Appalachia project in Scott County is off and running. Working with Grow Appalachia has been such a blessing! We have had a tremendous response from our community. At our last participant meeting, we focused on garden planning. We asked each participant to visualize everything they wanted their garden to be, and draw it on paper. We were blown away by what came out of this meeting. Our participants have BIG dreams for their gardens. Based on their gardens designs, we asked them to estimate how many plants and seeds they will need. Our UT extension agent was able to help them calculate what they would need with helpful formulas such as: (1/4 lb of corn per 100 ft row, and 1/2 lb beans per 100 ft row).
We were able to compile the information from this meeting and estimate the total number of plants and seeds we will need for the program. The numbers were much higher than we had anticipated. Going through this process has been so helpful.
Our participants are so exciting about the program. At our meetings, I can see friendships forming among our participants that I believe will last far beyond the growing season.
